About Stepwise

About Stepwise Founder, Sammy Dolgin

Hi, I’m Sammy — a Data Science Consultant from Chicago, IL. Since I was six years old, acutely tracking the win/loss statistics in my family’s weekly Yahtzee game in Microsoft Paint, I have been intensely drawn to working with data. I find immense beauty in the uncovered knowledge that circulates all around us — in nature, movement, emotion, and beyond. What is and is not true is entirely encoded in mathematics, and I feel honored to dedicate my career to the science of parsing out the complex truths that are concealed within our everyday actions and behaviors.

Background

Before moving to consulting, I served for several years as an optimization analyst at an advertising technology startup, helping brands such as eHarmony, Wayfair, Fandango, Ancestry, and Thrive Market to maximize the value of their web campaigns. During my time in adtech, I conducted extensive statistical analysis and A/B testing to optimize all ad campaign characteristics related to buying intent, click-through rates, value attribution, conversion lag, referral rates, and beyond. I’ve also held prior positions in edtech development and fintech research.

In 2019, I began serving as a Teaching Assistant and Data Science Trainer at the NYC Data Science Academy. In addition to working with over 100 up-and-coming data scientists on sharpening their skillset, I led various sessions each week on topics like Python/R Programming, Data Visualization, Hypothesis Testing, Linear and Logistic Regression, Tree-Based Algorithms, Support Vector Machine, among others. Following my time there, I was brought on by Trilogy Education to serve as a Primary Fintech Instructor for an extension program at The University of Pennsylvania.

Creating Stepwise Data

While working as an instructor, I began private consulting under what would eventually be known as Stepwise Data LLC. In July 2020, Stepwise became my full-time profession, and I’ve since been able to work with over 30 clients to help improve the way they use and understand data and information.

In conjunction with helping businesses understand the stories within their data, helping educate and guide prospective data scientists is my number one passion. While I continue to run courses with students at UPenn, I’ve also worked one-on-one with over a dozen students to develop a comprehensive plan on transitioning their careers to data science. Additionally, I’ve provided services to prospective data scientists via resume review, interview preparation, and as a general go-to for data science questions and knowledge on the overall landscape. I’ve also served as a mentor on MentorCruise, where I meet regularly with students to discuss their goals, create personalized assignments, and review their progress.
